Physical Education Requirements
PHILOSOPHY - Physical Education at Aliso Niguel High is a multifaceted process that teaches a wide range of skills and activities with the aim of the students becoming physically educated, physically fit, able to enjoy a variety of physical activities, and committed to lifelong health and physical well-being. In addition, each student will be held responsible on a daily basis to be prepared for class. It is a continuing process of articulated, sequential development of skills, talents, attitudes, and behaviors. The Capistrano Unified School District requires four semesters of Physical Education plus one semester of Health for graduation. All students must pass five out of the six Presidents Physical Fitness tests or must retake additional semesters until proficient.
GRADING POLICY - Students who fail PE9 must retake the course before taking any other PE classes. Grades will be based on the following areas:
A. PARTICIPATION (20%) - Students are expected to dress & stay in assigned area on a daily basis. Under normal circumstances, every student enrolled in Physical Education is required to dress & participate daily. Not dressing for P.E. is called a non-suit. Loaners are available, so this should not be a problem. Student I.D. is required to check out a loaner (student I.D.s are required to be carried at all times when student is on campus, failure to dress out will result in loss of points & student consequence). A parent may write an excuse from P.E. for medical reasons. (Phone calls not accepted.) The note should specify the reason & length of time to be excused. Absences & excuses from participating must be made up at the track or pool at tutorial. Parent notes are good for one day unless two or three days are specified. A doctor's note is necessary after three days. All notes should be brought to the teacher at beginning of roll call and should be dated, written and signed by parent . Absences & excused days are made up during tutorial when student returns to school. Students dress out even when excused. Two (2) loaners are allowed per semester. Parent phone calls/e-mails will be sent out upon receiving the 2nd loaner.
B) EFFORT (20%) - The wide-ranging physical attributes of students creates a need for teachers to be able to grade on effort and not totally on ability. This helps balance student grades as they develop and mature in the related skill areas.
C) WRITTEN TESTS/ASSIGNMENTS (20%) - Each unit in physical education will have written assignments, quizzes, and written tests. Students are expected to keep all handouts, manuals, assignments, quizzes and tests throughout the school year in a separate P.E. notebook. This notebook can/will be collected by the teacher for review and grading.
D) SKILLS EVALUATION (20%) - Skills testing and evaluation will take place after instruction and guided practice in each unit. Teachers may pre-test classes in particular skills related to the unit in order to establish goals for attainment at the end of the sport/activity.
E) FITNESS (20%) - All fitness activities and runs including the five (5) components of the fitness.
Cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body mass index.
A letter grade & a citizenship grade will be given on the report card at the completion of each grading period.
Students' grade & citizenship will be affected by the following; non-suits (loaners will be available), non-participation, tardies, absences, & inappropriate behavior.
