Course Description

This is college preparatory course includes the reading of novels, short stories, poetry and plays written by writers throughout the world.  Students will practice reading for thematic ideas, character development, and style.

Students will also be asked to read an independently chosen novel.

This course also includes instruction in writing literary analysis as well as continued work with persuasive writing.  In addition, students will keep a Writer's Notebook that will include informal response and analysis.

A good portion of class time will be spent exploring the ideas that literature evokes.  These activities will allow students to hone their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills while strengthening their ability to work with others.

Textbooks

Elliot, George P. et al.  Themes in World Literature.  Boston:  Houghton Mifflin Company, 1989.

*Collateral Texts:  Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart; Albert Camus, The Stranger; Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha

Texts will be provided; however, all students are strongly encouraged to provide a personal copy of the collateral texts.  Personal copies allow one to ‘own' the book - make notes, underline, etc.

Materials

Students are expected to come to class prepared.  This will include bringing the assigned reading, paper, a blue/black pen, a pencil, and post-it notes (if using a school textbook).  Each student will be asked to provide a 3 prong folder for the Writer's Notebook.

Extra materials could include highlighters, colored pencils, etc.

Also, because of budget restraints, our class would appreciate the following donations:  reams of white copy paper, Kleenex, and hand sanitizer.

Assignments and Policies

Students will be asked to read and write extensively in the course of each semester.  In addition to formal, expository essays, students will keep a Writer's Notebook.  The amount of homework may vary throughout the semester, but students should plan on spending an average of one half hour per night on English homework.

All assignments should be completed on time.  Incomplete work will not be accepted.  Late work will be accepted until the papers have been graded and returned to the class.  All late work will be marked down one letter grade.

All outside essays should be turned in on the due date.  If students are absent, it is their responsibility to send an electronic copy before noon on the day the essay is due and to turn in a hard copy on the day they return to class.  Essays that are turned in late will receive one grade lower.

If a student experiences computer/printer problems, he or she may submit a final draft written in ink by the deadline in order to avoid a lower grade.  I will hold this copy for one day until the student replaces it with the typed version.

Homework is posted each day on the school website.  It is the student's responsibility to contact me regarding makeup work for valid absences.  All make-up work must be completed within one week of the absence.

Plagiarism:

All papers submitted are expected to be the student's own work.  Information and/or opinions drawn from other sources are expected to be attributed specifically to their respective sources and to be cited appropriately.  Throughout the semester, students will be asked to submit selected assignments to Turnitin.com.  A student who turns in work that is either not his own or is without clear attribution to its original source will receive an "O" on the assignment and will be referred to the assistant principal.

Grading

The student's grade is based on a percentage of the total accumulated points for the grading period.  Grades will be posted at least once per grading period.  The student's portfolio grade and participation credit will be factored in at the end of each semester.
